A fine small inn, this four-diamond sea captain's estate on two acres offers a peaceful retreat. The reception hall, sitting room with its wood-burning fireplace, and the library are appointed with antiques, period wallpaper and reproduction furnishings reminiscent of Williamsburg.
Young packet clipper ship Captain Hiram Harding built this stately Greek revival style sea captain's home in 1839 for his bride of one year, Lydia. Captain Harding, a well-known sea captain from Chatham, and Lydia had nine children.
The main house, an 1839 Greek Revival style mansion, the attached carriage house, the luxurious stables and the 200-year-old "bow roof cape" called the captain's cottage provide 16 well appointed guest quarters. Each has its own personality; queen or king canopied or four poster beds, sitting areas, fireplaces, TV/VCRs and CD players; some have whirlpool tubs, mini-refrigerators, coffee makers; and all have a private bath, air conditioning, telephone with voicemail and data ports.
