In the fall of 1654, Dutch trader and explorer Jan Peeck sailed up the Hudson River to trade with the Mahicander (Mohican) Indians of the region. He found a wild and beautiful country with protected harbors and wooded hills sloping down to the river. Recognizing the natural beauty and commercial possibilities of the area, Peeck new a good thing when he saw it. Building his wharf and trading post there on the eastern bank of the Hudson, he forever lent his name and industrious spirit to the town that grew and prospered beside his "kill," the Dutch name for creek.
